On 26th September 2017, the Malta Transport Minister Ian Borg confirmed that Malta’s shipping register remains the largest in the EU and the sixth largest worldwide with a 63 percent increase in the number of new entries in the Maltese shipping register since 2012.

Vessel registration under the Malta flag and the operation of the Maltese ships is regulated by the Merchant Shipping Act which was enacted in 1973, the provisions of which are based mainly on United Kingdom legislation.
Malta is a party to most of the major IMO and ILO International Maritime Conventions and Malta flagships are obliged to strictly adhere to the provisions of these international conventions.
